Creative Play Ideas for Toddlers

Activities for toddlers to foster creativity

Hi mama,

Last week, we kicked off our Creative Play Challenge with a bang, diving into activities like block building, nature collages, and a super fun Vet's Office Pretend Play. Emi has been loving it, and I’ve been so grateful for these ready-to-go activities—especially during these chilly Michigan days.

If you’re joining in on the fun (or want to!), don’t forget to download the calendar and hop into the Facebook group. It’s the perfect spot for extra printables, tips, and plenty of inspiration.

These activities are simple and don’t require buying anything new. That said, in my next emails, I’ll share links to materials for those who want a little extra convenience.

Thanks for being part of this creative journey, mama. Can’t wait to hear how your little one’s imagination comes to life this week!

In joyful motherhood,
Liz

Toddler New Year Activities

Playdough Creations
Playdough is a toddler’s best friend! Hand them tools like rolling pins, cookie cutters, or let their fingers bring their ideas to life. The possibilities are endless, and it’s amazing for fine motor skills. Click here my favorite non-toxic playdough.

Animal Role-Play
Time to get moving and roaring! Can your little one stomp like an elephant or waddle like a penguin? Let them pick an animal and bring it to life with sounds and movements. Pro tip: Pair this activity with a book about animals, like this one!

Homemade Musical Instruments
Shake, rattle, and roll! Create shakers with rice and jars, or turn pots and pans into drums. Queue up their favorite tunes for a family jam session.

Shape Sorting
Grab some cardboard or paper and cut out shapes. Create a sorting box with matching holes and watch your toddler enjoy the challenge of fitting shapes into their spots.

Imaginative Tea Party
Time to get fancy! Host a pretend tea party with toy plates, cups, and stuffed animal guests. This is a great time to practice pouring, scooping, and stirring. Also, tea time is a great time to chat with your toddler, and develop language skills.

Color Hunt
Pick a color and search the house for matching items. Fill up a basket with everything you can find—great for color recognition and a fun way to burn energy indoors. You can do this activity a few days in a row and pick a new color each day.

Story Time with Puppets
Make puppets out of socks or paper bags and put on a show! This is a great way to bring stories to life and let your little one explore storytelling. You can also purchase a set of puppets, we’ve had these for a year and use them A LOT.

Book Recommendation

This challenge came at the perfect time because one of Emi’s favorite books right now is What Color is a Kiss? by Rocio Bonilla. This story is perfect for talking about creativity, self-expression, and practicing color recognition. Emi loves it and every time she colors she says “like mini moni”. Too cute!
