Teaching Mindfulness to Kids

Fun and Engaging Activities for Mindful Toddlers

Mindfulness has always been huge for me and in many ways, it has saved my life. As soon as I became a mom I knew I wanted to share some of the mindfulness practices I’ve learned over the years with my little one. In my opinion, it’s never too early to start and many mindfulness techniques can be adjusted to young kids, toddlers, and even babies.

Teaching mindfulness to kids, especially at a young age, can have incredible benefits for their emotional well-being and development. Engaging them in simple yet effective mindfulness activities can lay the foundation for a lifetime of mindfulness practice. Here are some delightful mindfulness activities for toddlers that you can incorporate into their daily routine:

  1. Breathing Buddies: Sit with your toddler and place a stuffed animal or soft toy on their belly. Encourage them to take slow, deep breaths, watching how their buddy rises and falls with each breath. This activity helps toddlers focus on their breath and promotes a sense of calmness.

  2. Mindful Eating: Turn mealtime into a mindfulness practice by encouraging your toddler to eat slowly and savor each bite. Engage their senses by describing the taste, texture, and smell of the food. Encourage them to chew each bite mindfully and notice how it feels in their mouth. This activity helps toddlers develop a healthy relationship with food and promotes gratitude.

  3. Yoga for Kids: Introduce simple yoga poses to your toddler, such as the tree pose or the cat-cow stretch. Make it fun by pretending to be animals or objects while doing the poses. Encourage them to focus on their breath as they move through each pose. Yoga helps toddlers develop strength, flexibility, and mindfulness.

  4. Daily Affirmations: Start each day with positive affirmations with your toddler. Encourage them to repeat phrases like "I am kind," "I am brave," or "I am loved." These affirmations help toddlers develop self-confidence and a positive self-image. Download my free affirmation cards here.

  5. Morning Meditation: Spend a few minutes each morning meditating with your toddler. Sit together in a comfortable position and guide them to focus on their breath or a calming image. Keep the meditation short and simple, tailored to your toddler's attention span. Morning meditation sets a peaceful tone for the day and helps toddlers cultivate a sense of inner calm. Here’s my go-to morning meditation.

  6. Grounding Walks: Take your toddler on short grounding walks, encouraging them to notice sensations in their body as they walk. Encourage them to feel the ground beneath their feet, the breeze on their skin, and the sounds around them. This activity helps toddlers connect with their surroundings and stay present in the moment.

By incorporating these mindfulness activities, daily affirmations, morning meditation, and grounding walks into your toddler's routine, you can foster their emotional well-being and help them build important life skills. Remember to approach these activities with patience, flexibility, and a sense of playfulness to make them enjoyable for your little one. With consistent practice, you can nurture a lifelong habit of mindfulness in your toddler.
