Surviving a Power Outage With A Toddler
August 1, 2024.
Santiago, Chile.
We heard a few strong winds but Emi didn’t wake up so how bad could it be?
Then, all the lights went out.
Little did I know, we were about to spend three days without power.
Theatricals aside.
Here’s what I learned during that unexpected adventure:
1. Stay Ready, So You Don’t Have to Get Ready
We weren’t prepared—none of our phones or laptops were fully charged, and we didn’t even have a lighter. On day one, we rushed to the store to stock up on essentials. And now we have a proper “lights out” protocol.
2. Screen-Free Entertainment Pays Off
We don’t rely on screens for entertainment, and that habit paid off big time. With plenty of non-digital options, we stayed entertained and connected as a family.
3. Everything Is an Opportunity
Instead of sulking and waiting for the power to return, we tackled some long-neglected home projects. It turned out to be a productive and fun experience!
4. We Make a Great Team
Through it all, our little family adapted and made the most of the situation. We were reminded that we’re quite the team when unexpected things happen.
As I write this, the power is still flickering and the wifi is not cooperating, so I’m not sure when I’ll be able to send this message—but fingers crossed it reaches you soon!

EAT: We’re on a soup kick, last week’s Chicken Pot Pie soup was delicious! But I tried another new recipe last week that was an absolute hit: Honey Glazed Pork. I’ll make it again for dinner tonight if the power holds out.
READ: Last week, I read Crown of Midnight, the second book in the Throne of Glass series, and really enjoyed it. I just started The Rose Code and I'm already hooked. After reading ten fantasy novels in a row, this historical fiction is a refreshing change of pace. If by any chance you are keeping tabs on my TBR list this is book 3 out of 23. 😅
HOME: Inspired by Marie Kondo’s “Does this spark joy?” approach, we’re getting rid of anything in our home that sparks an “ugh.” If it’s annoying, it’s gone! Also, everything needs a place and a system so we are researching all kinds of organizers. And you know what brings me joy? This. And this. And also having one hundred of these.

The Power Outage Edition
Here’s what Emi did during the blackout:
Explored every possible configuration on her Pickler Set.
Read every book she owns—classics like No Dogs Allowed and 123 of Thankfulness made a big comeback.
Helped Mama and Papa with house chores.
Attended a few Puppet Shows.
Enjoyed lengthy sticker book sessions.
Started her own drum band (and much to our delight, we made the cut!).
Ate a variety of meals that all looked suspiciously similar.
Played with her cool Story Time Flashlight.
Expressed her discontent over the not-so-perfect bath water temperature.
Stayed warm with an extra cozy sleep sack Mama made for her during the break.
Had some of the best sleep of her life.
