Toddler Books for Little Readers

Language Development Toddler Book Picks Approved by a Toddler

Welcome back to this month’s toddler reading wrap-up! This month’s picks have made storytime extra fun and interactive, bringing everything from laughter to snuggly moments before bed. My little one has been so captivated by these stories, and I think your toddlers will be too!

From beloved characters to simple yet profound messages, this list has something for every mood. Whether your toddler loves silly stories or calming tales, you’re sure to find a new favorite here. Let’s dive in!

1. From Head to Toe by Eric Carle

This classic Eric Carle book is perfect for getting kids up and moving! From Head to Toe encourages toddlers to imitate animal movements, from wiggling like a penguin to kicking like a donkey. My little one had so much fun acting out each motion, and it’s a fantastic way to keep toddlers engaged while supporting their motor skills. Plus, Carle’s vibrant illustrations always make reading feel like an adventure!

2. Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity by Mo Willems

A sequel to the beloved Knuffle Bunny, this book brings more humor and warmth as Trixie, our adorable main character, encounters some drama with her beloved stuffed animal. My toddler loved following along with Trixie’s adventure, and the story sparked lots of giggles. With its mix of black-and-white photographs and cartoon illustrations, this book is a fun visual treat that also teaches a gentle lesson about friendship.

3. Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann

This wordless picture book is a bedtime classic in our house! Good Night, Gorilla follows a zookeeper who says goodnight to the animals, unaware that a sneaky gorilla is letting them out of their cages. My toddler loves pointing out the animals on each page, and the minimal text makes it perfect for winding down before bed. The illustrations are hilarious and have sparked endless rounds of “good night” to every stuffed animal in our house.

4. Press Here by Hervé Tullet

This interactive book by Hervé Tullet has been a huge hit! Press Here invites kids to press, shake, and tap the pages, making it feel like they’re part of the magic. Each page features a simple instruction that “makes” the dots move in fun and surprising ways. My toddler gets so excited each time we “press” and see what happens on the next page. It’s a great pick for a rainy afternoon or any time you need a little extra engagement!

  1. I Am Love: A Book of Compassion by Susan Verde

This beautiful book by Susan Verde and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds introduces the idea of compassion in a way toddlers can understand. I Am Love gently teaches children how to show love and kindness, both to others and to themselves. It’s filled with soothing language and expressive illustrations, and my little one loves the gentle, affirming tone. It’s a great book for encouraging empathy and self-love, and we often read it as part of our bedtime routine.

I hope these books bring as much joy and connection to your storytime as they did to ours. Happy reading, and may these stories bring laughter, love, and a little magic to your toddler’s day!
